Nose Breathing for a Higher Functioning Life

We all know that the breath is vital to human life. Did you know that when we get conscious of our breath and work to balance our body/mind with our breath that we allow for fully functional breathing and expand our potential for a healthier life?

Sara and I come at so much of life with one of our foundations for living being the breath. She is a yoga teacher/practitioner and breath is the basis for all parts of yoga. I was a massage therapist for many years and still practice qi gong and meditation daily, using the breath as the tether for deeper practice.

Once begins practicing true and conscious breathing, the body responds by relaxing and working more efficiently no matter what we are doing. When the body relaxes, it sets up a feedback loop with the mind and helps it to relax as well. When the mind and the body work in concert to keep our organism in the flow, life really opens up and we are quicker to respond with grace and efficiency to all that life can throw at us.

In the last two days, three different friends sent me this Joe Rogan podcast about exactly this topic. When I hear about something three times, I figure that life is sending me a sign. I decided to listen to this show featuring James Nestor discussing the power of breath, particularly the power of nose breathing covered in his new book called “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art”

The link to the interview is here and we highly recommend listening to it. As a disclaimer, Joe does swear a couple of times during the interview but please don’t let that stop you from gaining some really great information on the science and practice of breath. Vital wisdom for a world that is hurting on so many levels. Enjoy, friends!
